Is My MD Baby Ready For Solids?

May 18th, 2012 by cgcusp3

Is My MD Baby Ready For Solids?

Although Montgomery County pediatricians generally recommend starting infants on solid foods when they are around six months of age, there are important developmental milestones that must be reached before your baby can take this step.

Even if an infant’s digestive system is ready for solid food, the baby must be able to safely swallow it. A baby should be able to sit with assistance but hold his or head up on their own. Without head and neck control, eating solids is difficult and dangerous. Many Montgomery County pediatricians also advise parents to wait until an infant shows interest in what other family members are eating.

If you are unsure if your infant is ready for solid food, check with your Montgomery County pediatrician. Remember that for the first year your baby’s nutrition will still come primarily from breast milk or formula.

My name is Shannon Smith. I am an advocate for children’s health and nutrition in Montgomery County. I also sell Xobiotic, a nutritional powerhouse. For more information on Xobiotic, call me today at 703-283-5459.

Health Benefits of Silver Spring…Dirt!

May 16th, 2012 by cgcusp3

Health Benefits of Silver Spring Dirt!

Most Silver Spring parents know about the health benefits of gardening as a family: spending time outdoors, working together, establishing a connection to the food we eat, better nutrition, and many more.

Something not so well known in Silver Spring is that the dirt itself contains beneficial bacteria that can aid in depression, cognitive functioning, and even in fighting some cancers.

Working with soil in Silver Spring – digging, pulling weeds, harvesting vegetables – exposes MD kids and parents to a strain of bacteria called mycobacterium vaccae. Recent research reveals that m. vaccae triggers the release of seratonin, which can elevate mood and reduce stress.

In one study, two groups of mice were fed peanut butter sandwiches before finding their way through a difficult maze. One of the groups had m. vaccae spread on the sandwiches. The mice that ingested the bacteria ran the maze twice as fast and exhibited half as many stress behaviors as the mice that didn’t have the bacteria.

Think of Silver Spring kids in the ‘good ole’ days,’ running around on unpaved roads, playing in meadows, forests, and dirt piles, and half of the time probably bare-foot. It is quite a different childhood than the sanitized version that exists in our society today. Children not only need more time out-of-doors, but they need to get dirty! Let your Silver Spring neighbors hear you yell: ‘Kids, go outside and get dirty!’

Baltimore, Prince George’s County, and Montgomery County parents may do themselves and their children a favor by adding to their kids’ emotional, physical, and intellectual health by letting them play in the dirt!

My name is Shannon Smith and I want to help Silver Spring families raise healthy, happy kids. Issues such as proper nutrition for children and childhood obesity in Baltimore concern me. I am the owner of a Washington, DC area home business that sells X Power Square.

Flu Shot Guidelines For Montgomery County Kids

May 9th, 2012 by cgcusp3

Flu Shot Guidelines For Montgomery County Kids

Every year as winter approaches, many Montgomery County parents wonder if they should get their kids a flu shot.

Everyone gets the flu, right? Is it that big of a deal?

In most cases, the flu is an inconvenience, but not detrimental beyond missing a few days of school. However, Montgomery County pediatricians caution that it is extremely important for high risk kids to get a flu shot. Ditto if your child is in regular contact with a high risk person.

What qualifies a child as high risk? Montgomery County experts say that chronic medical conditions such as diabetes or asthma puts a child at greater risk because the flu can contribute to serious complications. Many Montgomery County doctors also recommend flu shots for all children under five years old. Montgomery County experts advise getting your child’s flu vaccination as early as possible, in August or September or as soon as it is available, to protect them through the entire season which generally lasts from October to April.

Remember that two shots are required for children under the age of eight, given four weeks apart, for full protection your first year of getting vaccinated. Just one shot per year is needed after that.

Flumist is a nasal spray vaccine that can be given to healthy children ages two and up, an option that can be more child friendly. Side effects from either method of vaccination may include runny nose, muscle aches, vomiting, or low grade fever. The new flu vaccines offer protection from both H1N1 and the seasonal flu.

Washington, DC Kid’s Health: What Is ‘Failure To Thrive?’

May 4th, 2012 by cgcusp3

Washington, DC Kid's Health: What Is 'Failure To Thrive?'

Though Washington, DC children come in all shapes and sizes and grow at widely varying rates, sometimes an extremely low weight indicates a medical condition called ‘failure to thrive.’

This general term is used for children who weigh significantly less than other healthy Washington, DC kids their age.

According to Johns Hopkins Children’s Center, in cases of children with failure to thrive the rate of weight and height gain ‘may be more important than actual measurements.’ 1

Washington, DC children in the ‘failure to thrive’ category weigh lower than the 3rd percentile. In addition, their weight is significantly lower than what is considered healthy for their height.

In addition, Washington, DC kids with failure to thrive usually have delayed development in physical, social, and emotional skills.

In MD, failure to thrive can be caused by numerous factors, both physically and environmentally. Washington, DC parents who are concerned about their child’s development should consult their pediatrician, even if no specific medical symptoms are detected.

The Right Bedtime Snack Can Help Silver Spring Kids Fall Asleep

May 2nd, 2012 by cgcusp3

The Right Bedtime Snack Can Help Silver Spring Kids Fall Asleep

Montgomery County parents know that sleep is important for their child’s health. If your Silver Spring child has a hard time falling asleep, you may want to try a bedtime snack. Well-chosen evening snacks can help ease the transition to sleep.

Eating too much before bedtime is never a good idea for anyone, but a small snack may be just the ticket to dreamland for little ones in Montgomery County. Foods containing the amino acid tryptophan are a natural sleep aid, especially if they are coupled with carbohydrates, which help make tryptophan more available to the brain.

Bedtime foods you can purchase at your local Silver Spring grocer include soy milk, dairy products, nuts, seeds, and legumes, such as lentils or chick peas. These foods coupled with a healthy carbohydrate make the perfect bedtime snack. Your Silver Spring kiddos will be visiting the sandman before you know it.

Try a glass of soy milk with a few whole grain crackers or string cheese and apple slices. Low-fat cottage cheese with pineapple helps my munchkins fall asleep.

‘How-To’ Market Your Silver Spring Home Based Business

April 24th, 2012 by cgcusp3

'How-To' Market Your Silver Spring Home Based Business Some Silver Spring online or MLM business owners don’t understand the power of How-To’s in generating content for their Silver Spring online business blogs or e-stores.

If you are selling Xobiotic (as I am) or selling a financial opportunity like the Xobiotic home based business opportunity (as I am also) you have experience describing the benefits of your product and opportunity to potential customers.

If you have been running your Xobiotic online business for a while, perhaps you have personalized your demos to make them more compelling for your target market. If potential Washington, DC customers relate to you and your experience, they will be more likely to purchase your product or join your MD network marketing team.

If you can explain how you perform a task with your product or service, or how your product solves a problem, you can document this process to create a How-To article or video.

It’s easy:

  1. Perform the steps in the process, and write them down.
  2. Edit them for clarity and add personal details about how this process has benefited you or your customers.
  3. End with a quick summary.

For example, a How-To article describing how to sign up to own your own Xobiotic home based business opportunity would include:

  1. Call Shannon Smith at 703-283-5459 or email cacaoforyou@gmail.com.
  2. Pay the low start-up fee with check or credit card.
  3. Receive your Xobiotic start-up kit.
  4. Register for your Xobiotic online store.
  5. Personalize your Xobiotic e-store.
  6. Follow the marketing methods I provide.
  7. Process the Xobiotic orders you receive.
  8. Receive checks for your sales.

Of course, many of these steps could be described in more detail, but you get the idea.

I challenge all my Xobiotic MLM network members to create a How-To article or video this month. I am eager to see you express your creativity in your Xobiotic marketing.

Thanks for visiting. Check back often for more information on the Silver Spring Xobiotic entrepreneur opportunity.

‘Don’t Worry Mom, I’m Saving The World!’

April 20th, 2012 by cgcusp3

Dont Worry Mom, Im Saving The World!

Washington, DC parents: do you know what video games your kids are playing? If you haven’t looked through their games for a while, it’s probably time that you did. While playing rock band or sports games can be fun and entertaining, other games can be wrongly influencing your child with graphic violence and course language.

Some Silver Spring parents are unaware that many games have become more questionable when it comes to content. Many companies that sell violent games target their marketing at younger boys even though mature ratings specify seventeen and up. As with most forms of entertainment, the video game industry has continued down a slide of immorality and vulgarity.

Many Washington, DC kids rationalize: ‘Oh, they don’t affect me,’ or, ‘It’s just a shooting game,’ or ‘I’m only killing zombies,’ or, ‘I can turn the blood off.’

I believe that many Washington, DC kids are being desensitized by very graphic portrayals of violence and criminal behavior.
Especially if they play hours on end.

Video games with the mature rating have become as bad or worse then R rated films. It is up to Silver Spring parents to monitor their children’s game purchases and decide what is and what isn’t allowed.

If your son or daughter wants to play questionable games, discuss the content and explain why you object. Show concern for your kids by monitoring their games and limiting their playing time. Remember that video games, like other leisurely pastimes, can interfere with school.

I know some Silver Spring parents who have hidden the gaming controllers because their child kept sneaking improper games into the house.

This MD children’s health blog is dedicated to Washington, DC parents who are trying to raise physically and emotionally healthy children. I own a successful home business that features a unique line of super-healthy kids snacks. To order Xobiotic, call me today!

Silver Spring Kids And Headaches

April 17th, 2012 by cgcusp3

Silver Spring Kids And Headaches

Hello Silver Spring! My name is Shannon Smith. Welcome to my children’s health blog. I am a local Xobiotic representative and I am also an advocate for MD children’s health.

Children are no less prone to headaches than adults. If your Silver Spring child complains of pain in their head don’t ignore it.

Some of the most common triggers for headaches in children are:

Missing meals or dehydration
Getting insufficient sleep
Being under stress
Taking certain medications
Spending too much time in front of a flat screen
Consuming caffeine
Receiving a mild head injury
Infection

Eating certain foods can also trigger headaches for Silver Spring kids and teens. Keeping a food log for your child can help you determine if diet is a factor.

If you are prone to migraines, The National Headache Foundation recommends avoiding nuts, ripened cheeses, herring, pizza, and anything fermented.
